Google has rolled out a major redesign of the Settings page in Google Maps for Android, fixing one of the app’s most common complaints: clutter. The new layout replaces the old, overloaded list of options with a clean, categorized structure that is easier to scan and faster to use.
New Google Maps Settings Layout Brings Clear Structure
In earlier versions, the Settings page felt like a storage room where every new feature was simply added to the bottom of a growing list. In the latest redesign, Google groups settings into logical sections, making navigation more intuitive:
- App & display for themes, map controls, and accessibility.
- Navigation for driving, walking, and public transport options.
- Your vehicles for engine type, EV settings, and connected cars.
- Location & privacy for Timeline, Maps history, and profile controls.
- Offline maps for downloads and update management.
- Notifications for reminders and recommendations.
Users can find the new layout by tapping their profile picture in the top right corner of Google Maps and selecting “Settings.”
Google Maps UI Now Matches the Google App Style
According to 9to5Google, the redesigned Settings page now looks much closer to the main Google app. Menus are aligned to the left, and an “X” button in the top right corner lets users close submenus quickly, instead of constantly hitting the back button.
Not every section has changed dramatically. Menus like Your vehicles, Navigation, and Offline maps mostly keep their previous structure. The biggest visual and usability improvements are in areas like display, privacy, and general app controls.
Rollout Starts With Google Maps Version 25.9
The new Settings design is rolling out with Google Maps version 25.9 in the stable channel. The update is being enabled server-side, which means some users may still see the old layout for a while even after updating the app.
Google is also bringing the same redesigned Settings page to Google Maps on iOS. However, the impact there is smaller, since the iOS version already had a cleaner layout compared to Android.
What This Update Means for Everyday Users
This redesign does not add flashy new features, but it solves a real daily frustration. Finding settings for navigation, privacy, or offline maps now takes seconds instead of minutes. For drivers, travelers, and commuters who rely on Google Maps every day, that usability boost matters.
