VIAVI Solutions has entered into a partnership with Ground Control to integrate its Secure µPNT STL-1000 receiver into the RockFLEET Assured platform, aiming to deliver a more resilient alternative to traditional GNSS-based tracking and navigation systems.
LEO based altGNSS strengthens positioning in jamming and spoofing environments
The integration centers on VIAVI’s Secure µPNT STL-1000, a software-defined receiver designed to work with the company’s SecureTime altGNSS service. This service leverages Low Earth Orbit satellites to provide positioning and timing signals that are significantly more resistant to interference than conventional GNSS.
Unlike standard GPS and GNSS systems, which remain vulnerable to jamming and spoofing due to weak signal strength at ground level, LEO-based signals offer higher power and improved signal availability. This allows systems equipped with altGNSS capability to maintain operational continuity in denied or degraded environments.
The addition of holdover timing capability further strengthens system resilience, enabling continued operation during temporary signal loss. When combined with Ground Control’s satellite communication infrastructure, the result is a hybrid system that delivers both connectivity and assured positioning.
Assured PNT shifts from defense niche to mainstream requirement
From a market perspective, this partnership reflects a clear transition in how positioning infrastructure is being designed. GNSS alone is no longer considered sufficient for mission critical operations.
The increase in real world interference incidents has accelerated demand for multi-layered positioning architectures. These systems combine GNSS with alternative sources such as LEO-based signals, inertial navigation, and terrestrial timing solutions to ensure reliability.
What was once limited to military applications is now expanding into commercial sectors. Industries such as logistics, energy, and autonomous systems are beginning to treat resilient PNT as a baseline requirement rather than an advanced feature.
What this changes for the market
The integration of altGNSS into asset tracking platforms signals a broader shift toward redundancy in positioning systems. This reduces dependency on a single signal source and improves system reliability in real-world conditions.
For operators, this translates into fewer disruptions, higher data integrity, and improved performance in environments where GNSS alone would fail. In the long term, this trend is likely to accelerate the adoption of hybrid positioning solutions across both government and commercial markets.
It also reinforces the role of LEO satellite constellations as a complementary layer to GNSS, particularly in applications where uptime and signal trust are critical.
