Cavli Expands LTE Cat 1bis Portfolio With CQ16, C16QS, and C17QS IoT Modules

Cavli Wireless has expanded its LTE Cat 1bis portfolio with three cellular IoT modules designed to cover a wide range of device classes and deployment models. The CQ16, C16QS, and C17QS modules share a common Cat 1bis platform while addressing different requirements for size, positioning capability, processing performance, and system integration.

The lineup is aimed at OEMs building asset tracking systems, smart meters, industrial monitoring equipment, logistics devices, and smart city infrastructure that require LTE class reliability without the cost and power overhead of higher category cellular technologies.

LTE Cat 1bis Performance and OS Support Across the Portfolio

All three modules are based on LTE Cat 1bis technology, supporting downlink speeds of up to 10 Mbps and uplink speeds of up to 5 Mbps. The modules run FreeRTOS and are designed for embedded IoT applications that require predictable real time behavior and long term support.

Power management is a core design focus. The portfolio supports eDRX, sleep, and hibernate modes, allowing devices to operate for extended periods in battery powered deployments. Integrated SIM options are available depending on the module variant, simplifying hardware design and global rollout.

CQ16 LTE Cat 1bis Module for Compact and Cost Sensitive Designs

The CQ16 is positioned as the most compact option in the series. It is offered in LGA and Mini PCIe form factors and is designed for applications where PCB space and bill of materials cost are primary constraints.

This module does not include GNSS but supports Wi Fi scanning for coarse location and network visibility use cases. Dual SIM support enables network redundancy in regions with inconsistent coverage, making the CQ16 suitable for basic telemetry, metering, and fixed monitoring devices that require reliable cellular connectivity in a minimal footprint.

C16QS Cat 1bis Module With GNSS and Regional Variants

The C16QS adds positioning and broader deployment flexibility. It is available in LGA, Mini PCIe, and USB dongle form factors, allowing it to be used across embedded devices, gateways, and development platforms.

Optional L1 GNSS support provides standard satellite positioning for tracking and mobility applications, while Wi Fi scanning enables hybrid positioning in indoor or obstructed environments. The module is offered in multiple regional variants covering North America, Europe, Latin America, Eurasia, Japan, Australia and New Zealand, and India. Integrated eSIM support simplifies logistics and connectivity management for globally deployed products.

C17QS LTE Cat 1bis Module With Higher Compute and Dual Band GNSS

The C17QS is the highest capability module in the series and is designed for more demanding IoT workloads. Compared to the C16QS, it offers higher processing performance, increased RAM, and larger onboard storage, enabling more complex application logic and data handling.

This module supports advanced GNSS with dual band L1 and L5 reception, improving positioning robustness and accuracy in urban and industrial environments. Wi Fi scanning is also supported for hybrid location use cases. The C17QS is designed to support iSIM, reducing external component count in next generation device designs.

A key feature of the C17QS is support for running custom applications directly on the module through an integrated SDK. This allows developers to offload application logic from an external microcontroller, reducing system complexity and overall hardware cost while enabling edge processing use cases.

Target IoT Use Cases From Basic Telemetry to Intelligent Edge Devices

The CQ16 is suited for fixed installations and cost driven designs that require reliable LTE connectivity without positioning. The C16QS targets mobile and tracking oriented devices that need standard GNSS and flexible form factor options. The C17QS is aimed at applications such as smart city infrastructure, industrial automation, and intelligent edge devices that benefit from higher compute capacity and precise positioning.

All three modules integrate with Cavli Hubble, the company’s connectivity and modem management platform, which supports remote monitoring, SIM and eSIM management, and fleet level device visibility.
